Winter Riding

"In the cold weather my horse gets feeling good and bucks when I ride her. How can I stop her from doing this?"

In the cold weather horses do tend to get feeling good and may act silly when under saddle. The best you can do is ensure that your horse has adequate turn out time in an area that is large enough to move around in and expend some of her energy. If the ground is frozen though she will not want to run about and play so it is then up to you to lunge her in the arena (indoor) if you are fortunate enough to have one. Lunging for 20 minutes before you ride can take the edge off and make her more interested in working rather than playing. Make sure you lunge in both directions and be considerate of others who are riding at the same time. You may need to wait until the arena is clear before you lunge.

Once you are mounted, if she is still feeling good and wanting to buck the best thing to do is to make her move on and do some work. Give her lots to think about. Do plenty of circles and changes of direction and gait. If it is really cold she may be just saying that she is cold and needs to move along so she can get warm. If she is clipped you might want to use a quarter rug under the saddle over her back to help her stay a little warmer.

Sometimes if it is really cold and windy it really is alright to just call it a day and do something in the barn instead of riding. Spring is not that far away and warmer weather is coming.
