Horse Show Safety

Every year accidents happen at horse shows. Some are easily prevented, all it takes is a little thought. Horse shows are meant to be fun and having an accident happen at the show is not a fun day.

Things NOT to do at horse shows(or anytime for that matter)

    1. Rider schooling with out helmet.
    2. Rider sitting with both legs over the same side of horse resting.
    3. Putting small children on horses back…..may be fine at home but anything can happen in a crowd.
    4. Small children playing in the area of the show.
    5. Riders sitting in lawn chair with horse tied to chair.
    6. Tying horse to lawn chair or bench or other movable object.
    7. Leaving horses tied to trailer with out supervision.
    8. Leaving horses in trailer with out supervision.
    9. Horse tied to car.
    10. Hay net to low to ground allowing horse to get caught up in it.
    11. Riders coming up to close to other riders in flat classes.
    12. Walking horses to close behind other horses being held.
    13. Spectators mingling with horses in schooling areas.
    14. Loose dogs running around. Dogs should be always left at home.
    15. To many horses and riders in the warm up area at once.

Things you SHOULD do at horse shows.

    1. Always be polite. Most horse show workers are volunteers and they do not deserve rudeness. They are trying to give you a good day.
    2. Always have consideration for other competitors and allow them space to warm up. Do not crowd.
    3. If someone falls or is having a major problem pull up and stop.
    4. If your horse is being very badly behaved in a flat class ask the judge to excuse you from the class.
    5. Treat officials and ring crew with polite respect. It is not their fault if you are having a bad day.
    6. Riders should stay in the show area and not wander with their horses in to other parts of the farm where they have been asked not to go.
    7. Always get permission before taking your horse into strange barn or paddock.
    8. Arrive at the in gate ready and in order. Don't make them have to call you 10 times.
    9. When the day is over clean up after your group. Don't leave litter for the show crew to clean.
    10. Do your major schooling at home. Arrive at the show prepared. This is not the time to teach your horse something new.
    11. Dress in proper attire as required.

Another Do sent in by Brooke! Thanks Brooke!

I always get my students to attempt to find the sponsor of the class they have won and send a note or say thank-you. We NEED the community to support our sport and we should let them know we appreciate their sponsorship!

Paying attention to safety and having consideration for other competitors and officials can ensure a good day for everyone. Have a happy and safe show season.
