![]() PMU Foals - updated July 2006![]() Contacts for PMU foals. Naeric - North American Equine Ranching Information Council PMU Foal Acquisition Network, Inc. During the months of March, April, May and June thousands of foals are being born on farms in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and some of the Northern U.S. states. The difference between these foals and others being born all over the country is that these foals are being born to mares who live on PMU farms. These mares, during part of their pregnancy have a urine bag attached to them to collect their urine. This urine is made into Premarin, the drug that many women take during menopause. Whether this is morally right or wrong is not the issue here. The issue is that many of the foals born to these mares will live their short lives on the farm and then be purchased by the meat dealers at the auctions in September. They estimate that 30% of the PMU foals are sold as meat. I have come across a group of women who are trying to change these statistics. PMU Foal Quest. organizers purchase foals for the members at the auctions and then organize transportation to the new owners home. In 2000 they purchased 140 foals and shipped them to new homes across the US and Canada. There is nothing wrong with these foals. Most of them are quarter horse and paint types with some draft crosses as well. They are healthy and some are registered stock. The problem is quantity. There are simply not enough buyers to give all the foals homes. Therefore some foals are sold to meat dealers to be fattened and slaughtered for the European market. The foals that FoalQuest purchases are the foals that are in danger of being purchased by the meat dealer. These foals deserve a chance to a useful life. With out ever personally meeting the organizers, people mail in their money for the foal they are buying and wait till September to see a picture of the foal they are going to get. Foals arrive in their new homes in October. This year they are again looking for people who are willing to spend money and time to give some of these foals a chance. Check out their web site and read about PMU foals. It is also a part of the Equine Industry in Canada.
